Hours after the approval of John David McAfee’s extradition to the United States on tax charges, John McAfee’s death took place in the Spanish prison. John McAfee was wanted in the US due to tax related criminal charges pressed on him. The charges carried a prison sentence up to 30 years.
The apparent cause of the 75 year old entrepreneur turned felon, John McAfee’s death as reported by Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, was suicide. A report from the Catalina Justice Department states that the prison officers and the paramedics tried to save his life but all their efforts went to vain.
The statement precisely read, “Judicial staff have been dispatched to the prison and are investigating the causes of death, everything points to death by suicide.”
On Wednesday evening, the Reuters news agency was informed by McAfee’s lawyer about John McAfee’s death, allegedly due to him hanging himself in his prison cell.

McAfee was charged on the grounds of evading taxes by the Tennessee prosecutors after he failed to report the income that he made from promoting crypto currencies whilst also doing consultancy. The creator of McAfee virus software, John McAfee was apprehended in the October of 2020 at Barcelona’s international airport while trying to board a flight to Istanbul. The 75 year old’s arrest came into action after a US indictment rooting from alleged tax offenses had been made public by the authorities.
On Wednesday, Spain’s highest court approved McAfee’s extradition to the United States, however the extradition was left to be appealed and approved by the Spanish Cabinet. The ruling read, “The court agrees to grant the extradition of John David McAfee as requested by the American judicial authorities for the crimes referred to in the tax offense indictments for years 2016 to 2018”. McAfee’s personal life was just as rushing as his professional one. He made long runs for the US presidency twice and was also a participant in Librarian party presidential debates in 2016. Whilst being engaged in all these, he also dived into yoga, ultra – light aircraft and manufacture of herbal medicines.
McAfee was known for telling conspiracy stories on social media. He became the prime suspect for the murder of a neighbour in 2012 which still remains unsolved. The police found him living with a 17 year old girl and uncovered a lot of weaponry in his Central American country home.
